On December 3, 2018, the UN General Assembly declared January 24 as the "International Day of Education." Every year, the important role of education in creating a "culture of peace" and "sustainable development" is remembered. UNESCO was commissioned to organize this day, and all member states and non-governmental organizations were asked to pay special attention to this day.
So it is quite fitting that the PIENSA! Foundation was able to organize an excursion for German and Greek schoolchildren for the second time on January 24, 2023 as part of an international youth meeting. The destination this year: the orchards in Wiesbaden Sonnenberg.
Meadow orchards are important biotopes and a jewel of biodiversity. The landscape is uniquely beautiful in spring, when the trees are in full bloom. But meadow orchards are also an ideal place in all other seasons to experience biodiversity and learn something about the special significance of this old cultural landscape. Guided by the experts from our cooperation partner Naturefund e. V., the students learned why caring for the meadows and trees is so important and what is important in doing so. And of course they were able to get involved themselves. Together we cleared the trees of mistletoe and cut out dead branches. And then made biochar from the cuttings, which can be used to improve the soil and for new plantings. Thanks to the Naturefund outdoor team for this eventful day in the meadow orchards in Wiesbaden.
"Two Nations - One Nature" is an interesting project that has been successfully carried out for many years and is supervised and supported by the Social Work Office of the state capital Wiesbaden. As part of the project, 8th grade students from the Wilhelm-Heinrich-von-Riehl School in Wiesbaden receive guests from schools in the northern Greek city of Florina every year. The Wiesbaden students will be setting off for a return visit to Greece in April together with their supervisors. There, too, excursions into nature will be on the program.
In our picture gallery we have put together some photos from the excursion (click on the pictures to see more details):
