Visit to EuroNatur: Exchange on the status of the Balkan lynx project and many other topics

Ende August 2020 hatten wir die Gelegenheit, uns in der EuroNatur-Zentrale über das Projekt zum Erhalt des Balkanluchs zu informieren. Die PIENSA!-Stiftung unterstützt das Projekt seit dem Frühjahr 2020 und hat diese Förderung als Ergebnis des Gesprächs mit EuroNatur im September aufgestockt.

Neben einem Überblick zum Stand bei den unter den Corona-Bedingungen schwierigen aber dennoch weiter laufenden Bildungs- und Kommunikationsmaßnahmen im Projekt konnten wir uns mit EuroNatur über viele weitere interessante Themen austauschen. Das Treffen diente auch dem persönlichen Kennenlernen sowie der Vorstellung der PIENSA!-Stiftung und ihrer Strategie.

Aktueller Status der Umsetzung der Bildungs- und Kommunikationsmaßnahmen im Balkanluchs-Projekt:  
Ein wichtiger Teil des Gesprächs im Garten der EuroNatur-Geschäftsstelle in Radolfzell am Bodensee war der aktuelle Stand bei den von der PIENSA!-Stiftung geförderten Bildungs- und Kommunikationsmaßnahmen im Projekt zur Rettung des Balkanluchs. 

Die PIENSA!-Stiftung war Anfang  2020 auf das Projekt aufmerksam geworden, da ergänzend zur wissenschaftlichen Erforschung und dem Schutz des Lebensraums dieser seltenen Luchsart ein umfassendes Paket an Bildungs- und Kommunikationsmaßnahmen geschnürt worden ist. Teil dieses Pakets sind auch Maßnahmen in und für Schulen. Über diese Maßnahmen sollen Kinder zu Botschaftern für den Balkanluchs werden und damit die Menschen in ihrem unmittelbaren Umfeld für den Schutz der bedrohten Natur im Allgemeinen und des Balkanluchses im Besondern zu sensibilisieren. Das bereits erfolgreich in Albanien und Nordmazedonien eingesetzte Programm sollte 2020 auf den Kosovo ausgedehnt werden. Hinzu kommen weitere Angebote für Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene sowie Kommunikationsmaßnahmen zur Sensibilisierung der Bevölkerung in den großen Städten der Region.

During the conversation, the head of the project gave us a comprehensive overview of the measures implemented in 2020. According to her, some of the planned activities were not carried out due to the corona pandemic. These include, for example, workshops to train additional teachers in North Macedonia.
Other measures, however, were partially implemented. For example, schools in Kosovo were contacted and the teaching unit was held online as a replacement for face-to-face teaching. Although only 6 courses with 62 students could be held, the plan to introduce the very successful unit in Kosovo in 2020 has been at least partially implemented.
Die Bildungsmaßnahmen in Schulen, die Lehrkräftequalifizierung sowie die weiteren Kommunikations- und Bildungsmaßnahmen sollen möglichst noch im Jahr 2020 wieder gestartet werden. Ganz sicher werden diese aber in der nächsten Projektphase ab 2021 fortgeführt. 

Im Gespräch über das "Projekt Balkanluchs" sowie über die weiteren Themen (siehe unten) wurde klar, dass es in der aktuellen Situation fatal wäre, Entscheidungen über die finanzielle Förderung und Unterstützung ausschließlich an der tatsächlichen Umsetzung der Projekte auszurichten. Die Partner von EuroNatur in Albanien, Nordmazedonien und im Kosovo haben in den letzten Jahren mit großem Aufwand und sehr erfolgreich Kapazitäten in der Bildungsarbeit aufgebaut. Die Förderung jetzt zurückzufahren oder gar einzustellen wäre kontraproduktiv, da diese nach Überwindung der Pandemie nicht mehr zur Verfügung stehen würden. Daher hat sich die PIENSA!-Stiftung entschieden, ihr Engagement nicht nur fortzusetzen sondern die Förderung für 2020 noch einmal aufzustocken. 
Other topics:
In addition to the "Balkan Lynx Project" already supported by the PIENSA! Foundation, we were able to address various other topics. These include, for example, EuroNatur's current activities to expand bird protection on the Iberian Peninsula. We found that the PIENSA! Foundation's existing contacts in Andalusia are of interest to EuroNatur's future work. EuroNatur's plan to spread a successful nature education concept from Switzerland across Europe via the "stork villages" network also piqued our interest.

Of particular interest were the background and current developments in environmental and nature education work in the Prespa-Ohrid region, a region in the border triangle between Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, presented by Stefan Ferger from EuroNatur.
The Society for the Protection of Prespa (SPC) has been working there for many years to protect this extraordinary region around Lake Prespa and Lake Ohrid. SPC has also been running nature and environmental education activities in Prespa National Park for many years.

These aim to impart knowledge about the flora and fauna in and around the high-altitude lakes surrounded by mountain ranges. But cultural aspects also play a role and ensure that young people identify better with their very sparsely populated region.

As a Wiesbaden foundation, we are also participants in the regular exchange at the "Forum Wiesbaden international".


At the beginning of 2020, we learned about the student exchange programs that have been taking place with the northern Greek city of Florina for many years and then specifically informed ourselves about them. Students from Wiesbaden have also taken part in excursions to Prespa National Park in recent years and are bringing their knowledge and experiences back to our city. Perhaps these mostly older students will also become nature conservationists and remember their experiences in this region, which is one of Europe's great natural treasures.

The border triangle between Greece, Albania and North Macedonia lies in the southeastern part of the European Green Belt. It is of great interest to the PIENSA! Foundation for a variety of reasons. PIENSA! will be happy to get involved in safeguarding and - if possible and feasible - expanding the work in nature education. And not just in the "Balkan Lynx Project". Because not only the lynx, but also the preservation of the incomparable and wild nature in this region lies in the hands of the next generation.
But there is good news from the region:
At the end of September 2020, the Prime Minister of Albania decided to finally put on hold a project that had been rejected by conservationists for years. A large hydroelectric power plant was to be built on the Vjosa, one of the last great wild rivers in Europe. Now politicians in Albania are signaling that they have recognized that they are on the wrong track here. What's more: a national park is to be established on the Vjosa. EuroNatur comments on this with the following lines: "The door for a Vjosa National Park is now more open than ever. If Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama keeps his word, the Vjosa will remain a free-flowing river! How beautiful that sounds...almost too good to be true, right?"
