Have you ever heard of axolotls and do you know what stick insects eat? Boulos, Jack and Vincent now know all about them. They are students in class 5a at the Helene Lange School in Wiesbaden and completed an internship at our cooperation partner Cyperus 1901 eV at the beginning of February, organized by the PIENSA! Foundation.
The Cyperus 1901 eV association has been maintaining the biotope on the Petersberg in Mainz-Kastel for almost a hundred years. The unique natural oasis provides the habitat needed by many plants and many different animals. There is also an exhibition house with unusual animals. The association's experts are always available for joint nature education activities.
The focus of the student internship was getting to know all the tasks and work that occurs in the exhibition house. The exhibition house is currently home to stick insects, cold and warm water fish, as well as the extraordinary axolotl. These are aquatic Mexican caudate amphibians that have the ability to regenerate limbs, organs and even parts of the brain and heart after they have been lost. The name "axolotl" comes from the Aztec language and means "water monster".
After a short introduction with lots of information about the aquarium inhabitants, we started the practical work.Cleaning and changing the filter systems, cleaning the panes, filling the tanks and checking the water temperature were challenging tasks. Bacteria and mineral additives ensure better water quality in the aquarium. The students' mathematical knowledge was very helpful when calculating the amount to be dosed. The animals were then fed: fresh blackberry leaves for the stick insects, special pellets for the axolotls.
After dDuring the lunch break, the students had the opportunity to get to know the park. Bees, lizards, toads and a variety of birds and plants that were still in hibernation impressed the young nature lovers. Afterwards, paths were marked byom leaves and are now optimally prepared for spring thanks to the efforts of the hard-working interns. The boys’ CONCLUSION: “We’ll be back” and say “THANK YOU” for the great internship!
